Dozens of Americans have contracted salmonella from their pet turtles.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said August 31st,

37 people have become ill since March after coming in contact with Turtles.

A dozen of the people taken ill are under the age of 5,16 people have been hospitalized and the CDC said the outbreak could continue.

Salmonella symptoms consist of diarrhea fever chills and abdominal pain,

the infection has been recorded in 13 states with New York State seeing the highest number.

According to USA Today this isn’t the first instance of a salmonella outbreak across States.

It also happened in 2015 and 2013 which was the most severe with nearly 500 cases.

People are being warned not to by small turtles as they can carry salmonella bacteria,

especially a household with young children adults over 65 or pregnant women.
